Two ex-Wisconsin basketball players have career nights; now they face each other

Former University of Wisconsin men’s basketball players Daniel Freitag and Gus Yalden had huge games with their new programs — and as it happens, they’ll face off with each other this week.

Freitag, a highly regarded freshman from Minnesota who played 14 games with UW last year, scored 27 points for Buffalo against Rochester Institute of Technology on Nov. 15, with five assists in his team’s 80-64 win.

That’s his third straight double-figure scoring performance, including 20 points against Green Bay on Nov. 7 and 18 against DePaul on Nov. 11.

Buffalo moved to 4-0, with the 6-foot-2 Freitag leading the team with 18 points and three assists per game, shooting 36% from three-point range and 44 % overall.

Wisconsin guard Daniel Freitag (5) attempts a three-point basket during the second half of their game Sunday, December 22, 2024 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Wisconsin beat Detroit Mercy 76-53.

Next up for Buffalo: A home game against Vermont (4-0), which pays a visit Tuesday, Nov. 18.

The Catamounts just staged an 85-74 win over Northeastern on Nov. 15, with former Badgers recruit and Appleton native Gus Yalden scoring 18 points off the bench.

Yalden didn’t appear with the Badgers as a freshman in the 2023-24 season; he transferred to Seton Hall last season, averaging 8.4 minutes per game, and then moved to Vermont.

In his first appearance of the year, the 6-9 Yalden added five rebounds and five assists in the victory, playing 23 minutes.
