Darian DeVries after Incarnate Word win: ‘You’re going to have off shooting nights.‘

Indiana men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries addressed the media following his team’s narrow 69-61 win over Incarnate Word on Sunday night at Assembly Hall.

The Hoosiers, who hadn’t scored less than 90 points before Sunday and shot the ball as well as anyone in the country, struggled mightily from deep. Indiana made just 20.8% of its attempts from long range as Tucker DeVries and Lamar Wilkerson, the Hoosiers’ top shooters, combined for a 3-14 shooting clip.

Asked about the performance, DeVries said Indiana is built to shoot 3s and has good shooters, but they need to find a way to win on nights when they’re not shooting particularly well.

“There is plenty to look at as to why it happened, but the reality is you’re going to have off shooting nights,” DeVries said. “It’s just going to happen. Tonight was one of them.”

DeVries pointed to Indiana’s defense as the reason why the Hoosiers were able to extend the lead throughout the first half. Incarnate Word scored just 19 points in the first twenty minutes of the game, shooting just as bad from the field in the first half as Indiana did from deep throughout the game, 20.7%.

The Cardinals got shot after shot to fall late and put real pressure on the Hoosiers late. Ultimately, Indiana got enough stops late and sealed the game at the free throw line to stay undefeated on the young season.

“Like I said, I like learning after wins,” DeVries said. “That’s much better, but there is a lot of positives there, too. You know, we’ll take it for what it is and learn from it and move on.”
