The Iowa Hawkeyes were hit by another transfer portal defection on Thursday.
Forward Seydou Traore announced his entrance into the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday night.
“First and foremost, I want to thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to be a part of such an incredible program. I also want to thank Coach McCaffery and the entire coaching staff for believing in me and giving me the chance to be a part of the Iowa basketball family.
“To my teammates and the managers—thank you for showing up every day and pushing me to be my best. What we built goes beyond the game, it’s a true brotherhood that I’ll carry with me forever. To the fans—your support has meant everything. From the energy in Carver to the love in the community, I’m grateful for every moment.
“Due to the recent coaching change and after reflecting with my family, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal,” Traore wrote in his social media post.
Traore played in 27 games and started 12 with the Hawkeyes during the 2024-25 campaign. The 6-foot-7, 220 pound forward averaged 5.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 43.6% from the field and 26.5% from 3-point range.
Traore scored in double figures seven times, including his season-high 15 points against eventual Elite Eight foe Michigan State on March 6.
A product of New York, N.Y., Traore began his collegiate career at Manhattan before transferring to Iowa ahead of last season.
Traore represents the ninth Hawkeye to enter the transfer portal following the season’s end and after Iowa’s dismissal of former head coach Fran McCaffery. The 21-year-old joins guards Josh Dix and Brock Harding and forwards Owen Freeman, Pryce Sandfort, Ladji Dembele, Chris Tadjo and Riley Mulvey as Hawkeyes that have hit the transfer portal.
Forward Cooper Koch also entered his name into the transfer portal before withdrawing his name and returning to play for first-year Iowa head coach Ben McCollum.
