The UNC basketball program has their eyes on this guard in the transfer portal
The guard position is an important one for Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels to address this offseason through the transfer portal.
With Elliot Cadeau transferring to Michigan and RJ Davis out of eligibility, Davis needs to find at least two guards and maybe a third for his roster. UNC has already landed former West Virginia shooting guard Jonathan Powell, and they have their eyes on a few other targets as well.
That includes one of the top players overall in the transfer portal, Ja’Kobi Gillespie.
The Maryland guard recently entered his name in the portal as the program is shifting from Kevin Willard to Buzz Williams at head coach. Gillespie is drawing significant interest from programs already and is set to have an in-person visit with Tennessee on Wednesday before the Final Four dead period.
But he’s also drawing interest from North Carolina, Villanova, Kentucky, and Maryland per Jon Rothstein:
As you can see, he’s drawing interest from a pair of SEC programs as well as his former coach who is now at Villanova. The option to stay at Maryland under Williams is still on the table, as well.
With the dead period looming, UNC not getting a visit is a bit concerning as Tennessee is able to get him on campus. The Volunteers are rumored to be the favorites to land him early in his recruitment and an in-person visit could seal the deal.
Gillespie averaged 14.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 45.3 percent from the field last season with Maryland. He shot 40.7 percent from the three-point line as well.
