Sean Miller left Xavier to replace Rodney Terry at Texas. Miller has led teams four Elite Eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

During his introductory press conference on March 25, new Texas basketball coach Sean Miller stressed the importance of maintaining strong ties with the state’s basketball scene.

He did just that Thursday by hiring Kansas State associate head coach Ulric Maligi as an assistant, as first reported by K-State Online.

Maligi, an Arlington native who served as an assistant under former Texas coach Chris Beard, has spent most of his career coaching in the state after graduating from Howard University in 2006. Prior to leaving Texas after one season for Kansas State in April 2022 to serve as the associate head coach, he worked at UT-Arlington (2006-07), Stephen F. Austin (2007-10), Houston (2010-12), SMU (2012-15), Texas A&M (2016-19) and Texas Tech (2019-21).

Maligi has proven recruiting prowess, as evident by his work for Texas to sign former five-star recruit Dillon Mitchell out of Florida in 2022. He also has earned a reputation as a tactical defensive coach; under Jerome Tang at Kansas State, Maligi helped implement the Wildcats’ defensive schemes.

Earlier this week, Miller brought four members of his staff at Xavier to Texas — assistants Adam Cohen, David Miller, and Ryan Anderson as well as director of basketball operations Ryan Reynolds. He has retained Texas general manager Chris Ogden, a former player and assistant coach with the Longhorns who has spent the past two seasons as the program’s GM.
