SAN ANTONIO — A year-plus removed from Micah Handlogten’s 2023-24 season ending in gruesome, devastating fashion, the Florida basketball big man is getting a long-awaited rematch with the team his Gators lost to after he went down.
Auburn basketball beat Florida 86-67 for the 2024 SEC Tournament championship. Handlogten started, but less than three minutes into it, he went down and was carted off, breaking his left leg when coming down for a rebound.
One year and 19 days later, Handlogten is back to playing. He returned on Feb. 15, going 20 minutes in a win over South Carolina. Now, after helping the Gators to the Final Four, he gets a long-awaited rematch with Auburn.
“You can’t write it up any better,” Handlogten said Thursday. “It’s a great story.”
Handlogten didn’t play in this year’s regular-season contest between the two programs. He didn’t even travel for the Gators’ 90-81 victory, dealing with an illness while still being sidelined from his leg injury.
“It just adds to the excitement for me, personally,” Handlogten said. “Since a kid, I’ve dreamed of being in the Final Four, watching it every day, sneaking my phone into class, getting in trouble with the teachers watching March Madness. Like you said, just to add the fact that it’s my first game against the team that I got hurt against, it’s really something special to me.”
Handlogten’s played Auburn just once beyond the SEC Tournament contest, scoring 4 points, grabbing 9 rebounds and posting 5 blocks. But now, Handlogten’s listed with 20 more pounds on his frame, and his circumstance is set to be a dual-edge sword in his eyes.
