Should the NCAA transfer portal open before the end of March Madness?

The implosion of the Arizona State men’s basketball roster continues. Hours after it became public that freshman standout Jayden Quaintance had knee surgery and was also exploring his transfer options, 7-foot-center Shawn Phillips Jr. announced his intentions to seek another school.
Phillips became the sixth ASU player to enter the portal, although two of those didn’t play a game this season. The other key players to do so are Quaintance, Joson Sanon and B.J. Freeman, although Freeman was dismissed from the team late in the season after multiple conduct issues.
Sanon is the only player to declare a landing spot so far, having committed to St. John’s.
Phillips averaged 5.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 31 games. He started 12 games, most of those coming when Quaintance was unavailable, first due to a sprained ankle and then the knee injury that eventually required surgery.
Phillips scored in double figures six times. His season-best of 15 points came in a double-overtime loss at Texas Tech. He recorded two double-doubles, both coming in games against Kansas State. The most recent was an 11-point, 14-point showing in ASU’s Big 12 tournament opener at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.
In his final game this season, a loss to Nebraska in Las Vegas on March 31, Phillips had six points, six rebounds and five fouls in 18 minutes.
Coach Bobby Hurley has praised Phillips’ raw talent on several occasions, but the player is sometimes prone to foul trouble, which has thwarted his development. He fouled out of four games this season and had eight others in which he finished with four fouls.
Phillips just rounded out his second year in the program. That was preceded by his freshman season at LSU, in which he played sparingly.
