Orchard Lake St. Mary’s guard Trey McKenney is Michigan Mr. Basketball

The Michigan basketball program has landed its second big fish from the transfer portal in as many days.
Morez Johnson Jr., a 6-foot-9, 225-pound freshman from Illinois has committed to the Wolverines, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to the Free Press on condition on anonymity because it’s not official. Johnson averaged seven points and 6.7 rebounds last season for the Illini and was incredibly efficient around the rim, shooting 64.2% on the season in 17 minutes per night.
It’s now the second major acquisition for Dusty May and company in the portal in as many days, after they landed former five-star point guard Elliot Cadeau from North Carolina on Monday. Johnson reportedly also had offers from Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio State and others.
This in particular is an important pickup for the Wolverines, who enter the offseason under the impression they likely have to replace both halves of their starting frontcourt known as Area-51.
Vladislav Goldin, who averaged 16.6 points and 7.0 rebounds, is out of eligibility and plans to declare for the NBA draft. The expectation internally is also that forward Danny Wolf, who put up 13.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per night, will test the NBA waters and put his name in the draft as well.
While Will Tschetter told the Free Press he “absolutely” intends to return next season following the team’s season ending loss to Auburn, there’s a massive void in the big man rotation that Johnson will fill. Though he was injured when Illinois defeated U-M in Ann Arbor last year, the freshman big had a very solid first season at the power-five level, playing in 30 games with eight starts.
