Lamont Butler, Andrew Carr on Kentucky’s NCAA transfer portal hopes

Following a 78-65 loss to Tennessee in the 2025 NCAA men’s basketball March Madness tournament, Kentucky players Lamont Butler and Andrew Carr made the case for other athletes to transfer to UK.

LEXINGTON — Aside from a trio of freshmen, the first Kentucky basketball roster under Mark Pope’s guidance was fortified by the transfer portal.

Now, looking ahead to Year 2, Pope and the rest of the Wildcats’ coaching staff will turn to the portal once more.

That’s because UK will lose at least seven players from the 2024-25 roster. All seven were seniors. Six no longer had any eligibility remaining: Ansley Almonor, Koby Brea, Lamont Butler, Andrew Carr, Jaxson Robinson and Amari Williams. The other, Kerr Kriisa, can return for a sixth season via a medical redshirt; he announced Monday he planned to transfer.

That leaves five players who might be back next season.

Guard Otega Oweh would be a senior. Forward Brandon Garrison is a rising junior. And, if they all return, Kentucky would have a sophomore triumvirate in Collin Chandler, Trent Noah and Travis Perry.

While the Wildcats are set to bring in three freshmen, they unquestionably will be active in the portal, which opened March 24.
