LAWRENCE — Add Rylan Griffen’s name to a growing list of Kansas basketball players who’ve entered the transfer portal, as the program’s offseason continues.

A KU official confirmed Monday that Griffen, a junior guard this past season, is in the portal. That makes five Jayhawks who very well might not return to the program for the 2025-26 season, after a 2024-25 campaign that saw it finish 21-13 and lose in the round of 64 of the NCAA tournament against Arkansas.

The other KU players who are pursuing options elsewhere are senior guard David Coit, freshman guard Rakease Passmore, freshman forward Flory Bidunga, and redshirt junior forward Zach Clemence.

Griffen became a regular starter for Kansas and started 20 of his 33 appearances with the program, averaging 20.2 minutes per game. He also averaged 6.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.

But he wasn’t able to become the consistent 3-point shooter that many would have expected after he transferred in from Alabama, and at season’s end he finished at 33.6% (41-for-122) from behind the arc.

Maybe another offseason at KU could help Griffen regain that consistency. Maybe there’s a program out there for him that’s a better fit, that could help him return to form. Regardless, the Jayhawks are now in need of another 3-point shooting threat — and starter, for that matter — in the portal.
