Tennessee will play in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight for a third time in program history.

No. 2 seed Tennessee (30-7) defeated No. 3 seed Kentucky (24-12), 78-65, Friday in the Sweet 16 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Tennessee will next play No. 1 seed Houston (33-4) in the Elite Eight on Sunday in Indianapolis. Tipoff between the Vols and Cougars is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. EDT and will be televised by CBS.

Senior guard Zakai Zeigler set a SEC record for most assists in a single season. The previous record was held by Sean Tuohy (260) of Ole Miss during the 1979-80 season. Zeigler totaled 10 assists against Kentucky and has 270 assists during the 2024-25 season. The 5-foot-9, 172-pound guard has recorded 742 assists during his Tennessee career.

28,968 were in attendance at Lucas Oil Stadium, marking the second-largest crowd ever to watch a Tennessee basketball game. 41,072 were in attendance for Tennessee’s game against Michigan on March 28, 2014, also at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Rick Barnes has defeated Kentucky at least once in nine of his 10 seasons as Tennessee’s head coach. Barnes has a 33-28 record in NCAA Tournament games. He has the sixth-most victories of any active Division I head coach and the second-most in the SEC.
