Xavier guard Ryan Conwell is the latest Musketeers player to enter the NCAA’s transfer portal, according to a report from ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.
Conwell is the fifth Musketeer to enter the transfer portal since it opened on Monday.
It’s the third straight year in the transfer portal for Conwell, who began his career at the University of South Florida. It’s also the third straight year Conwell has had to deal with a head-coaching change at his school.
After his freshman season, South Florida parted ways with head coach Brian Gregory. Last year, Conwell helped lead Indiana State to the NIT title game after the Sycamores were one of the many NCAA Tournament snubs. Indiana State head coach Josh Schertz then took the job at St. Louis.
On Monday, Xavier head coach Sean Miller left for the Texas Longhorns.
Conwell was one of the two starters, along with Dailyn Swain, who were eligible to return to the Musketeers. Both are now seeking an opportunity elsewhere in the transfer portal.
Conwell averaged 16.5 points per game last season and was a third-team All-Big East selection. The Indianapolis native ranked third in the Big East in three-point shooting percentage (41.2%) and scored a career-high 38 points in Xavier’s loss to Marquette in the Big East Tournament.
Xavier now has two scholarship players on its roster in big man Lassina Traore and guard Roddie Anderson as the Richard Pitino era begins. Both didn’t play last season as Traore suffered a torn ACL in October and Anderson redshirted.
