Maliq Brown injury updates before Duke vs Arizona in March Madness

NEWARK, N.J. — Maliq Brown ‘could be available’ for Duke basketball in its NCAA Tournament game against Arizona, head coach Jon Scheyer said Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s day-to-day with Maliq,” Scheyer said. “There’s a chance he could be available (Thursday),” said Scheyer, whose top-seeded Blue Devils (33-3) face No. 4 seed Arizona (24-2) on Thursday (9:39 p.m., CBS) in a Sweet 16 matchup at Prudential Center.

Duke had a 15-minute portion of its practice open for media members Wednesday, spending most of that time stretching and shooting around. Brown had a sleeve on his left shoulder, but he participated in stretching and was shooting 3-pointers with the Blue Devils. That’s progress for Brown, who was wearing warmup gear and watching his teammates go through a 40-minute open practice in Raleigh ahead of Duke’s opening game in March Madness.

Brown, one of the Blue Devils’ top players off the bench, has missed 12 games. He missed four games earlier in the season with a knee injury and missed eight more with a dislocated shoulder, which he re-injured in Duke’s opening game of the ACC Tournament against Georgia Tech.

With his ability as a defensive disruptor and underrated playmaking, the 6-foot-9 forward has been an X-factor for the Blue Devils throughout the season. He leads the team in deflections as arguably the most versatile defender on the roster, capable of switching all five positions.
