Indiana basketball’s Kanaan Carlyle plans to enter transfer portal

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana basketball guard Kanaan Carlyle has entered the transfer portal, per On3 Sports.

Carlyle was one of three top 25 transfers who signed with the Hoosiers heading into the 2024-25 — he was the No. 15 ranked transfer in 247 Sports’ rankings — but he’s back on the market looking for his third team in as many years after a disappointing sophomore season.

He started IU’s first six games, but shot 27% from the field during that stretch and was only 6 of 24 (27%) from 3-point range. Former coach Mike Woodson reshuffled the starting lineup after Carlyle suffered a minor lower body injury during the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.

While Carlyle remained an impactful defender whenever he was on the floor and maintained a positive team-first outlook, he never put things together offensively and his playing time decreased significantly down the stretch. He only averaged 9.3 minutes over IU’s final seven games.

Carlyle’s final numbers — he averaged 4.0 points (28.9% shooting) and 1.2 assists for the Hoosiers — was down significantly from his promising freshman season at Stanford. He earned All-Pac-12 Freshman Team honorable mention honors for the Cardinals after putting up 11.5 points, 1.4 made 3-pointers (32%) and 2.7 assists per game.

New Indiana basketball coach Darian DeVries is nearing a total rebuild in his first season. The Hoosiers were graduating five players — Luke Goode is seeking a fifth year of eligibility in hopes of remaining with the team — and Carlyle is the fifth player to enter the portal since the season ended.
