Bennett Basich, a former star player from Hartland Arrowhead, redshirted his freshman year at UW-Green Bay.Basich decided to focus on improvement and a deeper understanding of the college game during his redshirt year.Despite a challenging season with only four wins, Basich remained positive and motivated, building strong bonds with his teammates.With a full offseason to prepare and strategic additions from the transfer portal, Basich believes UWGB will experience a turnaround in 2025-26.

GREEN BAY – The last time basketball fans saw Bennett Basich play was 2024, when he was one of the darlings of the WIAA state tournament.

The former Hartland Arrowhead star scored a career-high 43 points to beat De Pere in a Division 1 sectional championship.

He got a couple of stitches in his mouth after scoring 24 points and grabbing 5 rebounds in 48 minutes in an epic state semifinal win in four overtimes against Neenah, before scoring a team-high 17 points the following night in a title game loss to Milwaukee Marquette.

A lot has happened since the 6-foot-4 guard last appeared in a regular season or postseason contest.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay freshman watched former Phoenix coach Sundance Wicks — the man he committed to play for entering his senior season year at Arrowhead — leave to take the Wyoming job before he even arrived on campus.

Basich decided to redshirt under first-year coach Doug Gottlieb.

He proceeded to watch his new team win just four times, endure a 21-game losing streak and get bounced in the opening round of the Horizon League tournament with a 24-point loss to Oakland three days after it blew a 14-point lead in the second half of an overtime defeat to the same Grizzlies team.  

Basich helped lead Arrowhead to a combined 54-6 record his final two seasons in high school.

UWGB had six losses by the end of November.
