Point guard Elliot Cadeau leaving Tar Heels

Elliot Cadeau has entered the transfer portal, which means head coach Hubert Davis and UNC basketball need a new point guard for the 2025-26 season.

Cadeau, who just completed his sophomore season for the Tar Heels (23-14), made the move Tuesday after two seasons in Chapel Hill. The 6-foot-1 guard from New Jersey started 68 of his 74 games at UNC, including all 37 this season.

A gifted passer, Cadeau had 231 assists this season, which is the most by a Tar Heel since Kendall Marshall in 2012. He averaged 6.2 assists per game, but consistently struggled with turnovers and finished with a turnover rate of 26.1%. By the end of the year, Cadeau had an ACC-worst 113 turnovers after turning it over 67 times as a freshman who reclassified to join UNC a year ahead of time.

Cadeau had seven games with double-digit assists and had a strong finish this season, logging 38 assists with 10 turnovers in five postseason games. But he also struggled at times to defend without fouling, picking up three or more fouls in 21 games.

With Cadeau gone and RJ Davis out of eligibility, UNC will have a new starting backcourt that could include senior guard Seth Trimble.
