Former ASU basketball standout Joson Sanon transfers to St. John’s

Should the NCAA transfer portal open before the end of March Madness?

Rick Pitino, John Calipari, and even J.J. Watt sound off on the transfer portal opening during the NCAA tournament.

Sports Seriously

It didn’t take Arizona State true freshman Joson Sanon long to find a new home. The former five-star prospect, who entered the transfer portal when it opened on Monday, is headed to St. John’s.

The move takes the 6-foot-5 shooting guard back near home. He hails from Fall River, Massachusetts, and played at Vermont Academy. He was a top 25 national recruit when he came out of the school a year ago.

He played in 29 games, starting nine of those for the Sun Devils. He missed five games with an ankle injury suffered in the Big 12 opener against BYU and struggled with his shooting after returning. He averaged 11.9 points and 3.4 rebounds. His season-high of 28 points came in a road loss at Utah. He averaged 18.8 points over the last five games of the season.

ASU head coach Bobby Hurley has called Sanon the best shooter he has ever coached. That showed before the true freshman was injured, as he was shooting 50% from 3-point range.

Sanon was the first of four ASU players to enter the transfer portal but two of those did not play last season: Brandon Gardner and Bryson Long. The other was B.J. Freeman, who was suspended once before being dismissed from the team by Hurley.

St. John’s (31-5), coached by Rick Pitino, is coming off a season in which it won the Big East regular-season championship. It also defeated Creighton 82-66 to win the conference tournament championship. St. John’s opened the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed and defeated Omaha 83-53 in its first game, but was upset by No. 10 Arkansas 75-66 at Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence.
