OU basketball loses Luke Northweather, Yaya Keita to transfer portal

NORMAN — OU men’s basketball forwards Yaya Keita and Luke Northweather have entered the transfer portal according to multiple recruiting sites’ databases.

Northweather appeared in 30 games this season and averaged 2.7 points. The former Gatorade Missouri Boys Basketball Player of the Year who averaged nearly 30 points per game at Blair Oaks High School in Jefferson City, Missouri, was utilized as a three-point threat the past two seasons but never quite lived up to his promise in a Sooners uniform.

After playing close to seven minutes per game as a freshman at Missouri, Keita appeared in just 13 games in three seasons at OU. The last game Keita played for the Sooners was when he recorded two minutes against TCU in the Big 12 Tournament on March 13, 2024.

OU’s roster is expected to undergo another rebuild this offseason as every year is like free agency in college basketball. Head coach Porter Moser led the Sooners to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2020-21 and has made it clear it’ll take NIL resources to sustain success.

“To get your basketball program where you (want) you have to win in April and May,” Moser said following the Sooners’ season-ending loss to UConn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. “You have to win in April and May with the NIL.”

The NCAA men’s basketball transfer portal officially opened Monday and more than 500 players have already entered.
