With the Sweet 16 upon us, USA Today Sports’ Mackenzie Salmon previews a few of the top matchups we’re most looking forward to.

The SEC’s historic season continues into the 2025 men’s NCAA Tournament.

After setting a record with 14 teams qualifying for the tournament from the conference, the SEC set another record on Sunday after the second round. Seven of the 14 teams that got into the tournament are headed to the Sweet 16. Yes, that means just under half of the field of the regional semifinal round will be made up of SEC teams.

No. 1 overall seed Auburn, No. 1 seed Florida, No. 2 seeds Alabama and Tennessee and No. 3 seed Kentucky were all favorites to advance to the Sweet 16. However, No. 6 Ole Miss and No. 10 Arkansas are two surprises crashing the next round. The Razorbacks defeated No. 2 St. John’s in a major upset to advance to the Sweet 16.

At least one SEC team will advance to the Elite Eight as the Vols and Wildcats face off in the Midwest Regional semifinal on Friday. Florida (+350) remains the second-favorite in betting odds per BetMGM to win the NCAA Tournament, trailing only Duke (+225).

If four additional teams can find a path to victory, the SEC will have a chance to set a new record for the most teams in the Elite Eight. The Big East (2009) and ACC (2016) hold the record for the most Elite Eight teams with four.

The SEC is 15-6 in the 2025 men’s NCAA Tournament. The conference went 8-7 in the First Four and first round but posted a 7-1 record in the second round. The lone team to lose in the second round was No. 4 Texas A&M, which lost 91-79 to No. 4 Michigan.
