The FGCU men’s basketball team survived a late scare and held off Army 68-65 Monday in the first round of the Purple CBI Tournament in Daytona Beach.
The Eagles (19-14) led by eight points with 4:16 remaining but saw the Black Knights (17-16) pull within 67-65 on Jalen Rucker’s 3-pointer with 48 seconds left to play.
Following a missed layup by FGCU’s Michael Duax, Army’s Tate Laczkowski drew a foul and had a chance to tie the game at the free-throw line with seven seconds showing on the clock. But Laczkowski missed both foul shots. Jevin Muniz then sank one of two free throws to put the Eagles up by three.
Rucker missed a game-tying 3-point try at the buzzer, allowing FGCU to secure its first postseason tournament win since 2022 when the Eagles beat Detroit Mercy 95-79 in the first round of The Basketball Classic.
Duax and Dallion Johnson each had 16 points to lead FGCU. Muniz added 8 points and a game-high 9 rebounds. Army’s Rucker led all scorers with 25 points.
The Eagles will face the winner of Monday’s matchup between Queens and Cleveland State in the CBI semifinals at 9 p.m. Tuesday. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
