Public enemy No. 1 in West Virginia

It was not a good week for outspoken West Virginia fan Pat McAfee, former punter for the Mountaineers and Colts.

First, his basketball team was snubbed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee after being projected in the field by every bracketologist compiled by BracketMatrix. Not even 48 hours later, the 31st Indiana basketball coach was hired and he, you guessed it, was at West Virginia.

To make matters worse, though, McAfee and Mountaineers fans alike were bought into Darian DeVries, who said he looked forward to building a program in Morgantown. To be fair, DeVries delivered a 10-win improvement on the previous season and should have played Tuesday in Dayton instead of North Carolina, which went on to win by 27 over San Diego State.

“Men’s basketball team screwed by the selection committee, and then their coach leaves with their kid,” McAfee said on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday. “Now, Indiana is obviously a basketball haven, a place that is historically known for hoops.”

Of course, McAfee is referencing Tucker DeVries, the son of Darian, who was a former top-flight recruit and has played for his father each year in college. Now, Tucker entered the transfer portal Wednesday but has not announced his commitment, to Indiana or anywhere else. But, he was wearing an IU sweatshirt at his father’s introductory news conference.

The move still stings.

“(Darian) is public enemy No. 1 right now at West Virginia,” McAfee continued. “This guy became the coach at West Virginia less than a year ago. I met him at (football coach) Rich (Rodriguez’s) press conference and he was a cool dude. Thought he was going to do some special things with West Virginia.

“Obviously, him saying it was going to take something special for him to leave Drake to go to West Virginia in his opening press conference and building something special, then leaving after one year, especially with what just happened by the NCAA to the West Virginia basketball team and how the West Virginia people are feeling to…
