Jackson State men’s basketball came ever so close to ending its drought in the NCAA tournament.

The No. 2-seeded Tigers (16-18) fell to No. 5 seed Alabama State 60-56 Saturday in the SWAC tournament championship at Gateway Center in College Park, Georgia. Alabama State (19-15) will represent the SWAC in the NCAA tournament.

JSU was aiming for its first SWAC title and NCAA tournament appearance since 2007.

Center Shannon Grant led the Tigers with 20 points and nine rebounds. Keiveon Hunt and Jayme Mitchell Jr. both exited the game with injuries.

“We know they only played about seven guys, so we know we got to run,” Alabama State coach Tony Madlock said about JSU after the win on the ESPN broadcast. “We got to keep our tempo up. Quick, quick, quick. … And it worked out good for us.”

Madlock played at Memphis from 1988-92. He briefly served as interim Ole Miss coach in 2018 and was an assistant for Tigers coach Penny Hardaway from 2018-21. Madlock joined the staff at South Carolina State, where he earned his first permanent head coaching job in 2022. Madlock then took over at Alabama State a year later.

Alabama State’s CJ Hines scored 20 points followed by TJ Madlock, Amarr Knox and Shawn Fulcher, all with seven.
