UNC named first four out in JBR’s NCAA Tournament Bracketology

Where does JBR Bracketology now have UNC in the NCAA Tournament picture?

In most instances, a 22-win team makes the NCAA Tournament, regardless of what conference that team is in. Beating 20 other teams is no easy task.

Unless you’re the North Carolina Tar Heels. UNC is 22-13 a day before Selection Sunday, so why isn’t UNC a lock to make the Big Dance?

The answer is simple: North Carolina can’t beat good teams. The Tar Heels are 1-12 in Quad 1 games, with their lone victory coming against UCLA in December. UNC could easily have a few more Quad 1 wins under its belt, like Friday night against Duke in the ACC Tournament semifinals, but a missed free throw and heartbreaking lane violation changed that.

Yes, North Carolina is now 7-2 in its last nine games, but it hasn’t beaten any great teams. Wake Forest is a good win, but not a great one.

That’s why as of 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, the Tar Heels are one of JBR Bracketology’s First Four Out for the NCAA Tournament. Joining UNC are Texas, Colorado State and UC Irvine.

Unfortunately for North Carolina, Boise State and Colorado State are playing each other in the Mountain West Championship at 6 p.m. tonight. Top-seeded New Mexico led Boise State in the Mountain West semifinals late Friday, but the Broncos came back to win.

The Tar Heels need UC San Diego, which holds the Big West’s top seed, to beat UC Irvine tonight at 9:40 p.m. Texas lost to Tennessee in the SEC Tournament, but the Longhorns also did beat ranked Texas A&M in that same tournament.

All UNC fans can do right now is cross their fingers and hope for the best. A few more wins against quality teams would help North Carolina avoid this position, but alas, it’s now time to rely on other teams.
