Xavier’s Big East Tournament ended in Thursday’s quarterfinals after an 89-87 loss to Marquette at Madison Square Garden.

Following an 89-87 loss to Marquette Thursday in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals, Xavier needs the bubble to break its way to feel good about being picked for the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday.

There were a few bubble teams (Indiana, Ohio State) that fell early in the Big 10 Tournament to help the Musketeers. Now Xavier will be locked in for a loaded college basketball slate on Friday hoping some of the top teams in college basketball take care of their bubble opponents.

Xavier’s loss to Marquette was another missed opportunity, but the Musketeers did pick up a second Quad 1 victory when UConn pulled away from Villanova in the Madison Square Garden nightcap Thursday. The Huskies jumped two spots to No. 29 in the NCAA NET Rankings and Xavier needs them to stay in Quad 1 territory by beating Creighton Friday night in the Big East Tournament semifinals.

What help could Xavier Musketeers get on Friday?

In a Thursday night update, ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi still listed Xavier as one of the “Last Four In.” More importantly in that category, Xavier was still ahead of North Carolina and Texas.

In the ACC Tournament quarterfinals Thursday, North Carolina got past Wake Forest, 68-59. Texas won a double-overtime thriller over No. 14 Texas A&M, 94-89, in the second round of the SEC Tournament.

Xavier will be rooting against both of those teams on Friday along with Boise State.

Indiana and Ohio State were the first two teams out of Lunardi’s latest update, but Boise State is still alive in the Mountain West Tournament.
