LSU basketball loses to Mississippi State and is eliminated from 2025 SEC Tournament

LSU basketball is heading to an early offseason this year as the Tigers lost 91-62 to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the first round of the SEC Tournament on Wednesday night in Nashville, Tennessee.

Despite showing some fight early, LSU (14-18) found itself trailing by 21 at one point and in a 20-point deficit by halftime.

Things started to pick up early in the second half, though. The Tigers began capitalizing on Bulldogs mistakes. Over the period’s opening minutes, LSU chipped the lead away one possession at a time, trailing by as few as 11 with plenty of time remaining.

However, this proved to be short-lived. The run just seemed to fire up the Mississippi State offense, allowing the Bulldogs (21-11) to pull ahead for good.

Another lineup shakeup

With the season perhaps on the line Wednesday night, Matt McMahon chose to go back to a four-guard lineup that had led to some Tigers success during the conference schedule. However, with Vyctorius Miller still recovering from an ankle injury suffered the last time these two teams played, it required McMahon to tinker with the starters.

Curtis Givens III made his return to the starting lineup, while Jordan Sears made his second consecutive start. Alongside starting mainstays Cam Carter and Dji Bailey, freshman Robert Miller III rounded out the lineup as the only starting forward.

Offense falls too cold for too long

The opening stages of the first half were close, but a long cold stretch made things uncompetitive quickly. After Sears made a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to just two points with 10:04 remaining before halftime, the offense sputtered for the remainder of the opening period.
