First of all, I want to start by saying that I don’t think Tom Izzo is retiring anytime soon. A few years ago, the topic of Tom Izzo’s successor was a very hot topic in the Michigan State basketball community as it looked like the Spartans may have lost a little steam amidst the changing world of NIL and the transfer portal. That was obviously not the case, as Tom Izzo just won the Big Ten Coach of the Year award, and when I listen to Izzo talk these days, I hear a man who is extremely fired up and driven to show that his old school methodology can still be effective in the modern game of college basketball.
However, at 70 years old, there will eventually come a time when Izzo decides to ride off into the sunset, and I’m sure he is thinking about his legacy and who is successor might be, and it’s something I still enjoy speculating about with fans and colleagues.
Some names that have been floated these past few years include Drew Valentine, Denzel Valentine’s brother and the head coach at Loyola-Chicago, and Nate Oats, the extremely successful head coach of Alabama. That being said, I think a new name has emerged as a strong candidate, and it’s someone who would make a lot of sense as far as a natural transition goes. That man is Jon Borovich.
Borovich was just promoted to an assistant coach this past summer after spending a few seasons as MSU’s Director of Recruiting Operations. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Northwestern during a very successful time for that program. At Northwestern, he helped the Wildcats recruit stars like Boo Buie, Chase Audige, and Brooks Barnhizer. Before joining Northwestern, he spent eight seasons with Northern Illinois, with four of those years spent as associate head coach, where he helped lead them to one of their best seasons in program history. He also had successful stints in Dayton, and under Izzo’s friend Greg Kampe at Oakland, where he also helped lead those programs to some of their most successful seasons.
To put it simply,…
