MADISON – Wisconsin will be whole at the Big Ten tournament.
The Badgers men’s basketball team will have two starters back in the lineup when it plays in the second round of the conference tournament Thursday afternoon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Senior guard Max Klesmit, who missed the past three games due to a lower right leg injury, returned to practice Monday and is expected to return to the starting lineup when UW faces the winner of the Northwestern-Minnesota first-round game.
The team also will have back Nolan Winter. The 7-foot sophomore injured his arm/shoulder early in the second half of the team’s loss to Penn State on Saturday and didn’t play for the final 11 minutes.
Badgers coach Greg Gard touched on the importance of having all the team’s pieces after the game Saturday.
“I would say that those five that walk out to start the game,” Gard said, “they’re out there for a reason, and we need to have those guys out there and the guys off the bench need to continue to contribute in positive ways.”
Klesmit’s absence meant more minutes for senior Kamari McGee and redshirt freshman Jack Janicki. His return bolsters the UW bench and returns players to the roles they’ve grown accustomed to playing this season.
Klesmit is ready to roll.
“I know it’s been hard on the mental side the last three games not being able to be out there and play,” he said, “but I’ve got to do whatever is possible for me to get my body in position to be out there with the guys and play these games.
“I think I’ve put myself in a really good position to make a deep run in this Big Ten tournament here and this NCAA tournament.”
