What Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell said about being linked to Indiana job

CLEMSON — Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell has achieved immense success in the past two seasons. So much so, his name has come up in a potential coaching position in his home state.

Indiana coach Mike Woodson will step down after 2024-25 after four seasons. Indiana, a historic basketball program that has won five national championships, has not had much success in the NCAA tournament recently, making March Madness in only two of the past eight seasons (2022, 2023). Now, it is eyeing someone who can lift the Hoosiers, and Brownell has been linked to the opening by multiple Indiana media outlets.

Yet, the 15-year Tigers coach, who is from Evansville, Indiana, said Wednesday he is happy at Clemson.

“I’m not gonna talk about potential jobs,” Brownell said. “I have a great job, and I’m 100% focused on this team, what we’ve got ahead of us, trying to do everything I can to help us continue to win the next game.”

Brownell, 56, has ties to basketball in Indiana, playing college basketball at DePauw from 1988 through 1991 and working as an assistant coach for Evansville (1991-92) and Indianapolis (1992-1994). Yet, he said he is focused on the ACC tournament after No. 10 Clemson(26-5, 18-2 ACC) received the No. 3 seed.

Clemson set a program record for regular-season and conference wins this season and will make the NCAA tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time under Brownell. He also finished third in ACC coach of the year voting behind winner Pat Kelsey (Louisville) and Duke’s Jon Scheyer.

This season’s success came after the Tigers reached the Elite Eight for the first time in 44 years last season. Brownell, who was considered on the hot seat after missing two consecutive NCAA tournaments in 2021-22 and 2022-23, has become one of the longest-tenured ACC coaches and has been applauded for his ability to recruit capable players in the transfer portal while ensuring his own key contributors don’t leave.
