The first step in North Carolina making a run to the NCAA Tournament is off to a good start. Facing a big week in Charlotte for the ACC Tournament, the Tar Heels need to essentially get to the title game on Saturday to have a chance, and that requires facing Duke again.
But on Wednesday, the Tar Heels got off to a good start with a 76-56 blowout win over Notre Dame.
The Tar Heels took it to the Fighting Irish early, jumping out to a double-digit lead behind the strong three-point shooting including Jae’Lyn Withers. North Carolina made five three-pointers in the first nine minutes of the game to jump out to a 21-8 lead. That included three of those from Withers who finished the game with 21 points, all coming on three pointers as he went 7-of-10 from that area.
After a very slow start, going 5-of-20 from the field, Notre Dame did have a 7-0 stretch that helped cut the lead down to just seven in the first half. But another flurry by the Tar Heels pushed their lead out to 43-29 at halftime.
The second half was much of the same as UNC never relinquished the lead. The Tar Heels led comfortably throughout that final 20 minutes as the lead never went below 15. They did so with a balanced attack including out-rebounding the Fighting Irish as well.
While UNC kept Notre Dame from getting a lot of second chances, UNC’s defense was stout throughout.
The 21 from Withers led all scorers while Ven-Allen Lubin had 17 points and RJ Davis finished with 13.
UNC will now move on to face Wake Forest on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m..
