Wisconsin guard Max Klesmit was back at practice on Monday, according to Wisconsin basketball’s latest Instagram post.
“Good to have you back Max!,” the caption reads, as Klesmit is pictured catching a pass near the halfcourt logo.
The veteran guard has missed Wisconsin’s last three games with a lower-body injury. The team is 1-2 over that span, with a win over Minnesota and losses to Michigan State and Penn State. Klesmit’s ailment dates back to the preseason, when he was reportedly on a ‘pitch count’ during practice while rehabbing an ankle injury. He then missed time earlier in the season after falling awkwardly after a shot attempt during Wisconsin’s Jan. 6 win over Rutgers.
While Klesmit has been in the lineup through most of the season, he’s struggled to find his top form. The shooting guard is averaging just 9.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 35.3% shooting and 28.8% from three. Those shooting numbers are all down from his career-best 2023-24 season (9.9 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists on 43.7% shooting and 39.8% from three).
Still, despite Klesmit’s occasional shooting struggles, Wisconsin has badly missed his presence in the lineup. The team struggled to find consistent offense in its 71-62 loss at Michigan State, shooting just 33.8% from the field and 15.6% from three. A healthy Klesmit would have greatly aided the team’s offensive production, plus provided another veteran defender against Jase Richardson and the Spartans’ guard-heavy attack.
The same can be said for Wisconsin’s recent home loss to Penn State. The Badgers allowed the Nittany Lions to shoot 56.4% from the floor and 57.9% from 3. A healthy lineup, with both Klesmit and Nolan Winter, likely flips that result in Wisconsin’s direction.
Klesmit’s return for the Big Ten Tournament is major news as the Badgers look to bolster their NCAA Tournament position. We still await an update on Winter, who suffered a shoulder injury during the second half of Wisconsin’s loss to Penn State.
Wisconsin will take…
