NCAA tournament bracketology: One team nobody wants to face next week

There’s always at least one supposed little guy leading into every NCAA men’s basketball tournament, a team whose selection or exclusion is a source of joy or outrage among those who don’t get excited by the 14th team out of the SEC earning an at-large berth.

No wonder. The Bulldogs have won at least 25 games in five consecutive seasons and are much more of a real deal than a cute story out of Iowa.

Oh, and they watched fellow Missouri Valley member Indiana State twist in the wind last year, only to get shuffled off to the NIT (where the Sycamores promptly made a run to the final).

Drake knows all about that Indiana State team – the Bulldogs beat the Sycamores in last year’s “Arch Madness” final to snatch the Missouri Valley’s automatic bid. The Bulldogs get to skip over a week of anxiety and go straight to the list of potential bracket mischief-makers, a No. 11 or No. 12 seed plenty capable of winning a game or two later this month. And some power conference teams below .500 in their league and/or struggling to get to 20 victories have one fewer bid snatcher to worry about with a week of games still to go before the field of 68 is set Sunday.

Here is a look at Monday’s games with bracket implications, followed by our latest bracket projection. A new projection will be released every morning through Selection Sunday.

Furman bounced regular season champ Chattanooga in Sunday’s semifinals, making this the first time since 2014 that the No. 1 seed didn’t reach the SoCon title game. That leaves the Paladins…
