March Madness bracketology: Can Texas men’s basketball make the NCAA Tournament?

After defeating Mississippi State on the road, the path to an NCAA Tournament berth opened up to Texas men’s basketball.

That whiff of smoke was quickly snuffed out Saturday during Oklahoma’s first win over Texas in eight tries. The Longhorns seem destined for the NIT Tournament, barring a miracle run in the Southeastern Conference tournament. Their first challenge will be the No. 12-seed Vanderbilt, who defeated Texas 86-78 earlier in the season.

Consistency has bugged Texas all season. Even after their biggest victories — versus Kentucky, at Texas A&M, at Mississippi State — Texas failed to win the following game all three times. Freshman Tre Johnson is an electric scorer, but coach Rodney Terry’s attempt to reinject the roster with talent via transfer portal hasn’t gone as planned.

The SEC’s depth is incredible this season, with eight to 10 teams having a feasible shot at making the NCAA Tournament. Texas is one of them, but it needs to find a semblance of momentum if it wants to play deep into March.

Texas forward Devon Pryor (22) celebrates after scoring against Vanderbilt during an NCAA college basketball game Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, in Nashville, Tenn.

NCAA Tournament: Will Texas qualify for March Madness?

ESPN: Joe Lunardi has Texas as one of the first four teams out along with Boise State, North Carolina and Colorado State.

CBS Sports: Jerry Palm has the Longhorns completely off the bubble, not even mentioning them as a team who could make the tournament.

NCAA.com: Andy Katz hasn’t updated his bracket, but believes there is a path to Texas making the tournament, providing they at least beat Vanderbilt and Texas A&M in the SEC tournament.

Fox Sports: Bracket forecaster Mike DeCourcy has Texas, North Carolina, Dayton and UC as his first four teams out.
