Does Kansas basketball coach Bill Self think Shakeel Moore will play in Big 12 tournament?

LAWRENCE — As Kansas basketball continues its preparations for the Big 12 Conference tournament this week, it looks like it’ll have to try to make a run without Shakeel Moore.

Moore, a guard, has been hampered by a lingering injury and hasn’t played since mid-February. That would be a road game on Feb. 18 against BYU, which left him at 19 appearances so far this season — including nine starts. And Jayhawks coach Bill Self doesn’t see the five-game absence ending this week in Kansas City.

“He won’t play,” Self said Monday. “… He hasn’t practiced, guys, in three or four weeks, whatever it’s been. So, I can’t believe that he would. But the medical staff has told me that there is — he’s improving to the point where he may be serviceable. But, in my thinking, serviceable to me is practicing at least two or three days before you go out there. So, I can’t see that happening this week.”

Moore, who transferred in during the offseason from Mississippi State, gives Kansas (20-11, 11-9 in Big 12) a veteran presence in its back court when he’s available who can also do a lot for the Jayhawks on the defensive end. Without him, that’ll put more pressure on a fellow guard in David Coit to produce off of the bench. How Self manages the minutes of a starter, guard Dajuan Harris Jr., will also be something to watch this week during the Big 12 tournament.

Kansas is a No. 6 seed this year and has its first game Wednesday during the second round. That’ll come against either No. 11-seed Utah or No. 14-seed UCF. Win, and the Jayhawks would next play Thursday against a No. 3-seed Arizona team that they beat in Lawrence to finish up the regular season.

Kansas basketball guard Shakeel Moore goes up for a shot during a Feb. 18, 2025 game against BYU in Provo, Utah.
