Auburn guard Tahaad Pettiford named to SEC All-Freshman Team

The regular season is over, and now the awards are rolling in for the Auburn Tigers. On Monday, head coach Bruce Pearl was named SEC Coach of the Year and Johni Broome was acknowledged as SEC Player of the Year. Adding to the list is freshman guard Tahaad Pettiford as he was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. He joins Jeremiah Fears (Oklahoma), Tre Johnson (Texas), Asa Newell (Georgia), and Labaron Philon (Alabama).

Pettiford is averaging 11.6 points per game and three assists during the season. He has been good from beyond the three-point line, shooting 39%. He has done all of that coming off the bench. He has shown great sacrifice and has been a team-first player in this area. He was a spark for Auburn in the first half against Alabama, scoring 14 points on Saturday. The team needed that extra boost to close the gap with the Crimson Tide.

Most freshmen struggle on the road, but Pettiford is different. He is a fearless competitor that has been better away from Auburn—the statistics back that up. On the road, he is averaging 15 points per game and has been better from three, shooting 46%. In the 70-68 win over Georgia in January, Pettiford scored 24 points and hit five three-pointers.

As Auburn gets ready for postseason play in Nashville, Tennessee for the SEC Tournament, they will need Pettiford to continue his great play. Especially, if starting point guard Dener Jones is still hampered by injury.
