When does March Madness begin, and when will Wisconsin and Marquette know their NCAA Tournament opponents?

We’ve reached the final week before Selection Sunday, the kickoff to the annual NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. When will Wisconsin and Marquette play this week — and beyond?

Here’s what to know:

When does the NCAA Tournament begin?

Selection Sunday arrives March 16, with a CBS special at 5 p.m. CT, at which point the Wisconsin and Marquette men’s basketball teams — and maybe the UW-Green Bay women, too, with the women’s special beginning at 7 p.m. CT — will learn their fate for the NCAA Tournament.

The first-round games in the men’s tournament are Thursday, March 20 and Friday, March 21, and the second-round games to follow Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23.

The Badgers are likely to fall in the 3-4 seed range, while Marquette is looking at a 5-7 seed range.

The women’s tournament first round begins Friday, March 21, with games at as-yet-undetermined campus sites. Wisconsin won’t and Marquette likely won’t have women’s teams in the tournament, but the UW-Green Bay women will earn a berth with a win in the Horizon League championship game at 11 a.m. CT Tuesday.

When will the Marquette and Wisconsin men play in their conference tournament?

Though their NCAA Tournament resume is secure, the Badgers and Golden Eagles can tune up for the big showcase with a strong showing in their conference tournaments.

In Wisconsin’s case, it’s particularly urgent, since the Badgers need to solidify their tournament profile to earn a regionally friendly assignment for first-round games in Milwaukee.

Both the Golden Eagles and Badgers are No. 5 seeds. Wisconsin will face Minnesota or Northwestern in the Big Ten quarterfinals Thursday afternoon in Indianapolis at 1:45 p.m. CT. Marquette will face Xavier at roughly the same time in New York City, with a 1:30 p.m. tip.

The Wisconsin game will air on Big Ten Network; Marquette’s clash will air on streaming service Peacock.

With wins, the teams could continue playing Friday, Saturday and, in the Big Ten’s case, Sunday.
