The Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball team flew home from Stillwater Saturday after falling to Oklahoma State for their third straight Big 12 loss. After getting NCAA tournament at-large bid consideration by beating Baylor Feb. 25, the Bearcats have yet to win in March.

Saturday, UC looked as lackluster as it did against Kansas State on Senior Night, getting down 18 points in the first half. The Oklahoma State lead was shaved to eight by halftime, then with 4:31 remaining, Simas Lukošius nailed a corner 3-pointer to get UC within a point at 66-65.

Cincinnati Bearcats guard Simas Lukosius (41) and his teammates return to Kansas City’s T-Mobile Center this week for the Big 12 tournament. UC won two games last year before falling in the quarterfinals to Baylor.

Unfortunately, they would not score until a garbage-time dunk by Dan Skillings Jr. in the final seconds, losing 78-67. Oklahoma State finished on a 12-2 run. Jizzle James led UC with 17 points, but had just two in the second half. Skillings showed some of his old flare with 15 points, four assists, two steals and a block but somehow couldn’t find a rebound in over 27 minutes of court time.

“We have to make sure we bring whatever it was that we ate or whatever it was that we did before the game to Kansas City,” Oklahoma State coach Steve Lutz said. “I thought we did a much better job on Jizzle James in the second half. I thought defensively we were there as he was shooting more. We had more sense of urgency in guarding him and we did a better job keeping him in front of us.”

UC coach Wes Miller more subdued in Oklahoma State press conference

After a postgame blow-up Wednesday when the Bearcats offered up a disappointing effort on Senior Night vs. Kansas State, Miller was much more composed after Saturday’s loss. Perhaps his most recent vote of confidence from Athletic Director John Cunningham played a part. The bottom line is he’ll have roughly a day to prepare for the same team that led the Bearcats for over 34 minutes…
