The Malone University men’s basketball team celebrates a Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament championship Saturday at Hillsdale College.
The Malone Pioneers raised a few eyebrows when they won the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament as a seventh seed.
Head coach Charlie Wallrapp’s team will have more opportunities to continue this Cinderella run in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The Pioneers (16-5) are the No. 8 seed in the Midwest Region and will face top seed and host Missouri S&T (24-5) in the first round on Saturday. Tip-off time is to be determined.
Malone beat No. 4 seed Thomas More 76-63 on Saturday to win the G-MAC Tournament and earn the conference’s automatic NCAA berth. The Pioneers also beat No. 2 Kentucky Wesleyan and No. 3 Hillsdale in the G-MAC Tournament.
The Malone women’s basketball team did not receive one of the 41 at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers (22-8) lost to Hillsdale in the semifinals of the G-MAC Tournament.
