It took overtime and a spectacular performance from its star big man, but Oregon will be riding high going into the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament this week.
The Ducks wrapped up the regular season with an 80-73 victory against Washington on Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle to extend their winning streak to seven games.
Senior center Nate Bittle had his best game in an Oregon uniform with a career-high 36 points on 13-of-20 shooting – career-highs for both made field goals and attempts – and added 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and his third in the last five games.
“Nate did an unbelievable job – what a performance,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said on the KUJZ-FM postgame radio show.
With the win, Oregon (23-8) finished 12-8 in its first season of Big Ten play and will be the No. 8 seed in the upcoming conference tournament, which runs Wednesday-Sunday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The Ducks have a first-round bye and will open with a second-round game against No. 9 Indiana at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Sophomore forward Kwame Evans Jr. also had his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds against the last-place Huskies (13-18, 4-16), though he missed two free-throw attempts with 27.2 seconds left in regulation with the score tied at 68-68.
Washington’s Great Osobor missed a shot in the final seconds to secure the upset for the Huskies, sending the game into overtime.
Evans made up for his missed opportunity in regulation by making a pair of free throws to open OT. He then put the Ducks up 75-70 with a rebound basket with 2:17 to play that gave him his double-double.
“KJ, wow was he good,” Altman said.
