MADISON – The Big Ten men’s basketball tournament starts Wednesday, but for the Wisconsin Badgers it begins one day earlier than coach Greg Gard hoped.

A loss to Penn State in the regular-season finale cost the Badgers a top-four seed and double bye for the Big Ten Tournament that will be held Wednesday-Sunday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Wisconsin’s postseason journey begins with the second round Thursday afternoon.

Wisconsin basketball’s seed in the Big Ten Tournament

The Badgers tied for fourth place with UCLA and Purdue, but due to tie-breakers dropped to the No. 5 seed behind UCLA. The deciding factors for the tie-breaker were UCLA’s win over Big Ten champion Michigan State, which gave them the edge over UW and Purdue. The Badgers’ 94-84 win over Purdue on Feb. 15 elevated them to the No. 5 seed.

Who does Wisconsin play in the Big Ten Tournament?

The Badgers will play the winner of the Northwestern-Minnesota first-round game Thursday afternoon at approximately 1:45 p.m. The Badgers went 2-0 against the Gophers this season, beating them by 21 points in Jan. 10 and grinding out a seven-point win March 5. UW rallied for a nine-point second half deficit to defeat Northwestern Feb. 1.
