Missouri basketball coach Dennis Gates makes case for College GameDay visit on ESPN

Dennis Gates is making his case.

Ahead of the No. 19-15-ranked Tigers’ regular-season finale Saturday against No. 24/19 Kentucky at Mizzou Arena, the third-year MU coach made an appearance on ESPN with Rece Davis to preview the game.

And, at the end of the interview, to campaign for the network’s famous pregame festivity to make a trip to Columbia, Missouri, in the 2025-26 campaign.

“I wanna invite GameDay to Missouri at some point next season,” Gates said. “It is an electric atmosphere. You guys deserve to see it.”

“I’m in,” Davis said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve been there. Too long since we’ve been there.”

So, there you go. Opportunities have run out for the 2024-25 season, but a put a pin in ESPN making the trek to CoMo next year.

The Tigers are 21-9 this season, but three losses in their past four games have all but eliminated the team in the ace for a top-four spot in the SEC Tournament. Mizzou, according to recent projections for national prognosticators, are hovering around a 5-seed for the NCAA Tournament.

If there was a year for GameDay to visit Missouri, this might have been the one.

Mizzou went 0-18 in the SEC regular season last year, but has staged one of the more noteworthy bounceback seasons in recent college basketball memory. The Tigers have long since locked up a return to the Big Dance, and until their recent slump were a trendy pick as a March Madness sleeper.

The last time College GameDay visited Mizzou Arena was in February 2012, during the Tigers’ last season in the Big 12. The pregame showcase visited Columbia for MU’s final Border War game against Kansas…
