“At 27-3, against the nation’s top-ranked schedule, the Tigers are 24 games above .500,” ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi posted. “This is a staggering accomplishment, especially when you consider 60% of their games have come against Q1 competition. They’re 15-3 in those games, 6-2 on the road. Their only losses are against teams ranked Nos. 1, 4 and 20 in the NET.”
This is all in the spite of the fact that, ahead of its rematch with No. 7 Alabama on Saturday (1:30 p.m. CT, ESPN), Auburn is looking for a bounce-back victory after losing to No. 22 Texas A&M on Tuesday.
The Tigers are currently No. 2 in the NET rankings, but their 15 victories over Quad 1 opponents is a nation’s best, with Michigan State being the only other squad to have double-digit Quad 1 wins, at 11. There are six other teams who have nine Quad 1 wins heading into the final weekend of regular-season play.
“Theirs is arguably the greatest regular season since Kentucky arrived at the 2015 Final Four 38-0,” Lunardi said. “We know those Wildcats didn’t quite reach the finish line and maybe Auburn won’t, either. But what we have witnessed to date should not be forgotten.”
