The Wisconsin Badgers (23-7, 13-6 Big Ten) escaped with a 74-67 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday. Freshman Jack Janicki played the hero.
As the Badgers left Minneapolis, Minnesota, with a win, Janicki departed with a different-looking smile.
The walk-on freshman, who scored six timely points down the stretch of Wisconsin’s win, chipped one of his front teeth late during a sequence with the seconds ticking away. With under 30 seconds remaining, Janicki leapt for a defensive rebound following a Dawson Garcia missed layup. On the way down, he tripped on teammate John Blackwell and hit the front of his face directly on the hardwood.
Fortunately, Janicki suffered no major injury. But Blackwell pointed out his chipped tooth. Janicki then picked it up off the court and exited the game to a standing ovation. Reminiscent of his 11 points in Wisconsin’s win over Purdue on Feb. 15, his timely buckets proved crucial in the team securing an important road win.
After the contest, Wisconsin’s basketball program shared an update on Janicki’s freshly-minted smile.
The late-game effort and resulting injury displays the grittiness that the White Bear Lake, Minnesota, native provides for Wisconsin. While Carter Gilmore and Kamari McGee are listed ahead of Janicki on Wisconsin’s bench depth chart, he has emerged into an important role in the team’s rotation. On Wednesday, with John Tonje dealing with foul trouble and Max Klesmit out with injury, he was called upon to make the winning plays.
His first basket tied the game at 53 with eight minutes left in the second half. His second lifted Wisconsin to a 61-56 edge with 4:47 remaining. His third, finally, importantly maintained the Badgers’ five-point edge with 3:07 left. While he didn’t light up the box score like Tonje or Blackwell, his name should be near the top of the reasons that Wisconsin closed out a win.
Janicki’s final stats from the win: 22 minutes, six points (3-of-6 shooting), three rebounds, three assists, one steal, one block and one…
