Ohio State basketball is undefeated when Bruce Thornton hits this number

Ohio State basketball has had many ups and downs this season. With wins against Purdue and Kentucky on its resume, Ohio State is expected to make the NCAA Tournament, and its win over Nebraska Tuesday evening might have helped confirm that fate.

As for the Buckeyes, they have lived or died this season by guard Bruce Thornton. From Alpharetta, Georgia, Thornton has been the team’s No. 1 scoring option, averaging 17.8 points per game. He is shooting 50.7% from the field.

It has been an impressive run for the star, and when he hits 25 points, the Buckeyes are a completely different team. He has hit that mark five times this season, including in the Buckeyes 116-114 win over Nebraska Tuesday. Ohio State is 5-0 when he has at least 25 points, and in each of those games, he has knocked down at least 60% of his shots.

If the Buckeyes are going to beat Indiana Saturday or make a run in either the Big Ten or NCAA Tournament, they are going to need Thornton at his best, and when he’s aggressive, this is a far better offense.

The Buckeyes sit 10th in the Big Ten right now and are 9-10. With the 8th-place team 11-8 and the 11th-place team 7-11, the Buckeyes against Hoosiers, both teams of which sit 9-10, will ultimately also have a direct correlation with the Big Ten Tournament seeding.

Ohio State has some weapons other than Thornton, but he is certainly the team’s main playmaker. In a tough conference that could be double-digit bids in the NCAA Tournament, the Buckeyes will need Thornton to step up in a big way over the next few weeks.
