The Marquette men’s basketball team has just one more game in the regular season to polish its NCAA Tournament profile.
The 20th-ranked Golden Eagles (22-8, 13-6 Big East) close against St. John’s on Saturday at Fiserv Forum.
The Red Storm (26-4, 17-2) is No. 23 in the NET rankings, which gives MU a chance at a Quad 1 victory (a home game vs. teams in the top 30 in the NET).
More: Forget the box score. These are the stats Marquette men’s basketball coaches look at.
Here is a look at where MU will land next week on Selection Sunday:
Likely scenario for Marquette: No. 5 seed
It would have been tough for MU to move up to a No. 4 seed, but it definitely would have needed to beat Connecticut on the road Wednesday. The Golden Eagles had their chances down the stretch, but couldn’t get over the hump in a 72-66 loss.
Best-case scenario for Marquette: No. 5 seed
Even if MU beats St. John’s on Saturday, then makes a run in the Big East tournament next week, it will be hard for the Golden Eagles to change their likely scenario. Results beyond the first day of the conference tournaments are usually unlikely to sway the NCAA committee.
Worst-case scenario for Marquette: No. 7 seed
If MU gets dominated by the Red Storm, then gets routed by a red-hot Xavier in the first round of the Big East tournament, there is a chance MU could tumble to a No. 7.
Marquette’s best win: At Maryland
MU’s 78-74 win Nov. 15 in College Park, Maryland, has aged like gold. The Terrapins have risen to No. 12 in the NET and 13th on KenPom.
Marquette’s worst loss: At Villanova
The Wildcats had a hot-shooting night in an 81-66 win over MU on Feb. 21 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. But Villanova doesn’t have any hopes for an at-large big to the NCAA Tournament, especially after a loss to Georgetown on Tuesday.
