North Carolina’s NCAA Tournament chances could come down to Saturday’s season finale against rival Duke in the Dean Dome. Despite six-straight wins, the Tar Heels are still on the bubble heading into this weekend.
They are playing some of their best basketball of the season at the moment and are battling for a double-bye in the ACC Tournament. A win over Duke likely gets them in the tournament but if they lose, they will need to make a deep run in the ACC Tournament to have a shot.
Ahead of Saturday’s rematch, ESPN analyst Jay Bilas broke down North Carolina’s situation:
“Six straight wins, averaging 91 points a game and they’re shooting well over 40% from three during that time period – making over 10 threes a game. It’s a different North Carolina team than I think Duke faced in the first game. And North Carolina’s playing for their lives. They’re on the bubble right now. I think they’ve got a resume that compares favorably with the other bubble teams. But you get a win against Duke at your home floor, that could clinch it,” Bilas explained.
North Carolina has played much better of late but the glaring mark on their resume is the 1-10 record in Quad 1 games so far. If anything is going to keep them out of the tournament, it’s going to be that mark.
However, Bilas did say he believes they have a favorable resume compared to other bubble teams. Some mock brackets believe that as well. In the end, it comes down to UNC’s ability to win Saturday’s game and then putting it in the hands of the tournament committee.
