OXFORD — Ole Miss basketball’s latest win was huge.

The Rebels beat No. 4 Tennessee 78-76 on senior day at the Sandy and John Black Pavilion. The Volunteers are the highest-ranked team coach Chris Beard has beaten at home in his tenure.

Senior forward Jaemyn Brakefield, playing for the final time on his home floor, had an electric second half. He scored all 19 of his points after the break. His game-winning layup with seven seconds remaining lifted the Rebels to the victory.

Now Ole Miss basketball has two elite wins. The Rebels beat No. 4 Alabama 74-64 on the road in January.

How Ole Miss basketball’s win vs Tennessee affects March Madness

Before the win, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi projected Ole Miss as a No. 8 seed. He matched the Rebels up against No. 9 Gonzaga in Wichita, Kansas. The winner would likely face No. 1 Houston in the second round.

CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm projected the Rebels as a No. 6 seed. He had No. 11 VCU as Ole Miss’ first round opponent in a game in Providence, Rhode Island.

Beating Tennessee is a major boost to the Rebels’ resume. Expect it to put most national projections in line with Palm’s, with a chance to improve even further depending how the Rebels finish.
