Dominant win over Virginia Tech shoots UNC basketball up latest NET rankings

[ad_1]

The North Carolina Tar Heels are making their best late-season push for an NCAA Tournament spot, beating everyone in their path.

UNC (20-11, 13-6 ACC) is currently in the midst of a season-best 6-game winning streak, starting with Syracuse back in February. North Carolina proceeded to then dominate rival NC State, Virginia, pull away from Florida State late, beat Miami (FL) comfortable and – most recently – turn heads with Tuesday’s 91-59 thumping of Virginia Tech.

The Tar Heels have just one Quad 1 win, coming against UCLA back in December, but their NET ranking could help be a deciding factor on Selection Sunday.

Speaking of NET rankings, UNC jumped five spots – from 43rd to 38th – in the NET rankings based on games through March 4.

North Carolina is one spot ahead of Arkansas, a fellow March Madness bubble team, which shot up eight spot of its own. The Tar Heels are a spot behind Creighton, which trail just St. John’s in the Big East standings.

UNC has its greatest test of the year coming up on Saturday, March 8, hosting archrival Duke for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off. The Blue Devils (27-3, 18-1) are not only the ACC’s first-place team, but they’re atop the NET rankings.

North Carolina is shooting the ball extremely well during its winning streak, particularly from deep. Hubert Davis finally found a starting lineup that works, headlined by strong play from his two big men: Ven-Allen Lubin and Jae’Lyn Withers.

If the Tar Heels find a way to beat Duke Saturday, they’ll climb further up the NET rankings and should solidify a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
