LEXINGTON — Kentucky basketball got a feel-good win against LSU on Tuesday night when it really needed to feel good.
But not much can be gathered from the Wildcats’ 95-64 victory, other than the Tigers just might be the worst team in a historically great and deep SEC. It all sets up the Cats’ trip to Missouri on Saturday to close out the season.
That will tell everything we need to know about how Kentucky will fare in the postseason.
The Cats, who were flying high through January with four wins over teams ranked in the top 10, still haven’t won consecutive games in a month as they have alternated wins and losses going back six games.
That all started when injuries began to take their toll on the lineup. Starting guard Jaxson Robinson missed four straight games before rejoining the lineup in their win at Oklahoma.
But he also reinjured his wrist leading UK coach Mark Pope to reveal after Saturday’s loss to Auburn that Robinson needed season-ending surgery.
Robinson wasn’t that vital to the lineup that UK couldn’t get past LSU. The Tigers, under former Murray State coach Matt McMahon, have stumbled to a 3-14 conference record. At times in the first half at UK, LSU looked helpless as the Cats ran to a 27-point halftime lead.
Missouri presents a much different challenge.
If the Cats can win in Columbia, there’ll be reason to believe they can regain their form. A loss would be hard to stay optimistic of UK playing well into March.
