Wisconsin’s position in Joe Lunardi’s bracketology after its road loss to Michigan State

Wisconsin basketball (22-7, 12-6 Big Ten) fell to No. 10 overall in Joe Lunardi’s ESPN bracketology on Monday.

The update follows the Badgers’ road loss to the Michigan State Spartans (24-5, 15-3 Big Ten) on Sunday. Wisconsin remained afloat for roughly 36 minutes before a bevy of turnovers and key missed three-point attempts essentially sealed a Michigan State victory.

As was the case in UW’s late-game meltdown against the Oregon Ducks on Feb. 22, the loss prompted movement in Lunardi’s bracketology and other notable national rating metrics. The team slipped to No. 10 in KenPom, No. 12 in the AP Poll and No. 14 in the NCAA NET rankings.

Before the contest, Lunardi ranked the Badgers as the No. 9 team in the nation and the top No. 3 seed. The team’s wire-to-wire loss to the Spartans spurred the analyst to move UW to No. 10 overall.

Wisconsin now ranks behind Auburn, Duke, Houston, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Michigan State, Iowa State and Texas Tech.

Here are the top seeds from Lunardi’s updated bracket:

East: No. 1 Duke (No. 2 overall), No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Texas Tech, No. 4 Michigan

West: No. 1 Tennessee (No. 4 overall), No. 2 Iowa State, No. 3 Wisconsin, No. 4 Texas A&M

Midwest: No. 1 Houston (No. 3 overall), No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Kentucky, No. 4 Purdue

South: No. 1 Auburn (No. 1 overall) No. 2 Michigan State, No. 3 St. John’s, No. 4 Arizona

Wisconsin did climb as high as the No. 2 line after defeating Purdue on the road in late February. The Badgers’ 6-6 record against Quad 1 opponents and combined 16-1 mark against Quad 1, 2 and 3 teams encapsulates its entire season before the Big Ten Tournament — the team has excelled against teams it should take care of, plus has played fairly well against some of the best teams in the nation.

Only Minnesota and Penn State remain on Wisconsin’s regular-season schedule, which should lift the team to 24-7 overall. That will likely bolster the team’s status as the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament — a significant improvement from where the…
