Wisconsin basketball is holding strong as a No. 2 seed in USA TODAY’s latest NCAA Tournament bracket projection.
The Badgers hold that top position despite two losses in their last three games, the latest a hard-fought defeat at the hands of top-ranked Michigan State. They sit on the No. 2-seed line with Alabama, Michigan State and Florida.
Other Big Ten teams in the projected bracket are Michigan (No. 4 seed), Purdue (No. 4), Maryland (No. 5), Oregon (No. 7), Illinois (No. 7), UCLA (No. 8), Ohio State (No. 11) and Indiana (No. 12). Both the Buckeyes and Hoosiers are among the ‘Last Four In,’ while Nebraska sits firmly on the bubble, part of the ‘Last Four Out.’
Wisconsin’s place among the top-ranked teams in the sport is a bit of a surprise after its recent losses. Many viewed the team as a No. 2 seed after its wins over Illinois and Purdue in mid-February. Its ensuing Quad 2 loss to Oregon and road loss at Michigan State prompted many, including ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, to drop it to the No. 3 seed line.

Time still remains for Wisconsin to establish its place as a No. 2 seed and make the USA TODAY prediction come to fruition. The team closes its regular season schedule with games against Minnesota and Penn State, then gets the chance for resume-boosting results during the Big Ten Tournament.
While Wisconsin has slipped from its previous position near the top of KenPom, the NCAA NET and other ranking services, it has shown the ability to beat the nation’s best. A return to strong form during the conference tournament could precede the team’s first Sweet Sixteen trip since 2017.
